An increasing number of Brazilians are going to the USA in search of professional opportunities. After all, the country is facing a severe labor shortage and, consequently, has opened numerous positions for foreigners.
According to a consultancy report, 86% of American employers cover all the fees and costs of the green card process for immigrants they hire.
Additionally, visas such as the EB-3, EB-2 (excluding the EB-2 NIW), and H-1B require the immigrant to have a job offer in the USA for their petition to be approved. But how can one secure a job in the USA?
Although AG Immigration is not a job agency and does not mediate job placements for those wanting to live in the USA, we have compiled some valuable tips for those seeking employment in America.
Visit the USA
Before searching for job opportunities in the USA, it's advisable to have visited the country before to ensure that you can adapt to the American lifestyle and culture.
Additionally, entering the USA as a tourist or student—two of the most common visas—will allow you to make contacts, meet people, and expand your network in the USA. These contacts may eventually offer you a job.
For example: suppose you are an engineer planning to visit the USA at the end of the year. Research engineering companies in the cities you will visit and, upon arriving, leave your resume with these companies. Also, check out the nearby bars and restaurants. Who knows, you might make friends in these establishments who could refer you to job openings in the future?
Learn English
No American visa requires you to know English to obtain it. However, the language is essential for conversing with others, attending job interviews, and instilling confidence in potential employers.
Don't worry about having an accent or limited vocabulary; what's important is being able to communicate fluently with others.
Social Media
On social media platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, and even in WhatsApp and Telegram groups, you can find groups of immigrants heading to the USA and those who already live there.
They can certainly help you with common questions and provide guidance on finding a job in your field. It may be relatively easy to find a position if you are a programmer, but if you are a manicurist or a ceramist, finding such positions may not always be straightforward.
Send Your Resume
Are you a truck driver? Search on Google: truck driving companies or best truck driving companies or truck driving companies hiring US, and so on. Visit these companies' websites and look for the Careers page. Send your resume or fill out the application form on the site.
Your resume needs to be in English, of course, but it can be used for all the opportunities you come across.
The same strategy can be applied if you are an airplane pilot, a journalist, a nurse, a dentist, a packer, a salesperson, and so on.
For those with no experience or many qualifications who want to work in fast-food chains, a good route is the Delight Restaurant site, which hires for brands like Wendy’s and Taco Bell. Also, The Cleaning Authority
Don’t be afraid; after all, it’s an investment in yourself!
Job Websites
On US job websites like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, GlassDoor, Career Builder, Jooble, Even, or Monster, you can search for positions based on the location you want to work in and terms like "Portuguese speaking," "visa sponsorship," "EB-3 sponsor," or "EB3 sponsorship."
These filters—and various similar ones—help you find jobs that require Portuguese speakers or, for example, that sponsor visas like the EB-3. These searches can also be done on LinkedIn.
If you are a farmworker and want to enter the USA through the H-2A visa, there are options on government websites like the California state site or the US Department of Labor. You can search using the term “H2A” in the search field. Some sites also offer positions for other types of visas, so it’s always good to explore all options and look for positions in your area.
Other similar sites include those for New York, the federal US government, Texas, and North Carolina.
Another interesting site is Achei USA.
Employment Agencies
There are also employment agencies. Unlike websites, where you generally don’t pay anything (companies pay to advertise the vacancies), in agencies, professionals also pay a fee.
However, in this case, you are paying for them to secure a job for you in the USA. Since the fees can be high, it's always good to get recommendations or consult an immigration lawyer before entering into any agreement.
