Brazilians accustomed to the Unified Health System (SUS) and the Emergency Medical Service (Samu) might be surprised to learn that not all countries offer free medical care. This is true even in one of the world's richest economies: the United States, which has the most expensive healthcare system in the world.
This was highlighted by the research Mirror, Mirror 2021: Reflecting Poorly on Health Care in the U.S. Compared to Other High-Income Countries by The Commonwealth Fund. The U.S. healthcare system is the most expensive globally, even though analyses show that its performance is the least satisfactory compared to 11 other surveyed countries.
In the U.S., a simple flu can cost up to $300 (about R$1,500) if a home visit is required, according to data from Omint Seguros.
More complex and unexpected situations are even more costly. In extreme cases, such as emergency surgeries, the bill can reach $100,000 (R$500,000) — not including medication costs.
Here are approximate costs for some procedures and services:
• General consultation: between $200 (R$1,000) and $300 (R$1,500);
• Emergency room visit: $2,000 (R$11,000);
• Ambulance: between $400 (R$2,100) and $1,200 (R$6,800);
• Hospital stay (per night): between $3,000 (R$11,000) and $4,000 (R$15,000).
Travel Insurance
Although not mandatory for entering the U.S., travel insurance can cover medical and hospital expenses, dental care, repatriation of remains, medical evacuation, as well as other items and additional options such as baggage loss assistance and trip cancellation coverage.
In the Brazilian market, there are several travel insurance options, but it’s important to review the conditions of the trip before purchasing one. You should also pay attention to the coverage amount, or the maximum expense the insurance will cover.
Experts recommend a coverage amount of at least $60,000 (R$300,000). Travel insurance plans with the best cost-benefit ratio typically cost around R$450 per traveler.
